I set up my other desktop computer on wireless connection. For some reason, its not finding any wireless networks, including my main computer network.

I get the following error under WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION STATUS:
Limited or no connectivity: You may not be able to access the internet or some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.

Clicking on 'Repair' does not help either.

Recently I noticed how my antivir and malware software had some detections when I last scanned today. Maybe i have a virus??

I did a HijackThis scan...below:

Howdy,

Technically logs dont get read in this forum. I cant read them either. What you problem is probably some DNS error. Try these:

1. Click Start > Run > Type cmd
2. At the command prompt type ipconfig /flushdns.
3. Then type ipconfig /release
4 And finally type ipconfig /renew.

I hope this solves your problem. If not please state in next post. If you a positive its a virus, please post your log in the Security Forum.

Thankyou.

Do you have any cordless phones at all ?
Is you wireless secure ?

If secure - set it to unsecure - open and see

start>
control panel>
system>
hardware tab>
device manager button>

network adapters
click on the + sign

post backs whats there

also any ! X or ?

-------------------------
download and run
Free software to check signal strength of wireless is netstumbler 0.4.0 available for download from http://www.stumbler.net/

----------------------------

Post and ipconfig and try these pings

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

ONE ---------------------------------
start
run
cmd
ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

NEXT lets see if you can get out onto the internet with both names and IP's - its possible the IP number you get back on the first test is different to the one I post {I'm in UK} so use the number you get instead of mine

------------------------------------------------
try ping the name and then the IP see below

start
run
cmd

C:\Documents and Settings\wayne>ping {the default gateway ipaddress you got above }

I tried what you recommended, I still have the same problem. I got the limited connectivity error again.

In the "C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe" window, the follwoing appeared:
***
Windows IP Configuration

No Operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected. An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out

***
Please advise.

Thanks

No detections now....but my computer can't access the wireless network still. Would you be able to tell if something is wrong from the HijackTHis profile?

This is the important info - The other test wont work because of the results here - so your not doing anything wrong.

The wireless cannot find a DHCP so windows assigns 169.254.x.x

Now as its a desktop this may not be possible - to move and connect with a lan cable and see if we can it working that way to start with - Then down load this prgram and install
Free software to check signal strength of wireless is netstumbler 0.4.0 available for download from http://www.stumbler.net/

If not can you download on othe desktop and hopefully have a CD writer to copy to the faulty desktop

It will see if we can at least detect wireless signals.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Have you encrypted the wireless signal ?
Have you a cordless phone ? - if so, try going into the router and removing the secruity
see if that works

So as the device is seen in device manager without ! ? X etc - thats a good start

Hi.

I downloaded the Network Stumbler, and it has picked up 3 networks (1 of which is mine).

The encryption is turned on for my network, and the other two as well.

I do have a cordless phone, but I've had the cordless phone for a long long time and my wireless network was working fine until now.

I'd also try changing the channel, even though you've "had the cordless phone for a long long time". :)
