Havent actually used the Cd drive in a long while, 5 months to be exact..But today, I bought a new piece of software i have eagerly been waiting to mess with...
I unwrap my new disc of sheer entertainment , pop it in the drive ...and nothing..
so I click the start tab, scroll up to run..
Browse for the D: drive ...and click it... POP UP! (D)D: drive not ready. wtf !!?? I Cancel, hit My Computer, select the D: drive, Hit properties...DRIVER NOT READY!
W T F!!??

I run update drivers, I seek hardware profiles, everything checks out ok. I WANNA RUN MY NEW Software! blah! im upset!

Have you run through the system BIOS to ensure that your Bios still recognizes that you indeed have a CD_Drive?? Other than that, I would suggest that you crack that case and check all of your cables, could be that one has wiggled its way loose and is not sending good signals to said bios......

Have you also removing the cd-rom from your hardware profile and reinstalling the cd-rom from scratch via windoze???

Hope one of them helps ya sort it...

Solly..:(

OK, Step 1.

To check drive status in System Bios. Restart PC, during the start-up process, you will notice a screen, or text that will appear, its different on almost all pc's, so I wont try to guess, but it will say, F2=Setup, or something to that effect. it may be F8=BIOS, or a combo thereof.

Anywho, after you get in, you will be presented with a list that you can scroll through with your up and down arrow keys. Scroll through the list until you see, "Secondary Drive 0", and it should list that its an IDE CD-ROM (or whatever type you have) hit the space-bar to see its status, it should be: Drive Type: Auto | Capacity: N/A. If its not that, you the change feature, to make it that.

Save changes, and allow system to restart.

If that checks out ok.

Step 2.

TURN OFF YOUR PC.

GROUND YOURSELF (with either a grounded wrist cable, or by grabbing the metal FRAME of the case chasis, DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING IN THE PC UNTIL YOU DO THAT)

IF YOU DO NOT, YOU WILL MORE THAN LIKELY DAMAGE YOUR PC.

AFter the above:

Open your PC's case, depending on type of case, you may have to unscrew it from the back, or if Server-Side, just slide the side off, if Server-Side, you will see handle like depressions in the sides.

Remove cover, and inspect the wires that attach to the CD-ROM, on your Secondary IDE Channel, ensure that all of the wires are securely attached. IF so, goto:

Step 3.

Open up your systems Control Panel. Click the Add/Remove hardware icon, and follow the wizard. If you are prompted with the Choose A Hardware Task. Choose the Troubleshoot, it may find the problem, other wise, if just presented with a list, then delete the CD-ROM drive, and then go back to Add/Remove hardware, and go through the add sequence.

I can walk you deeper through, just let me know.

Thanks....

Before you go and mess with your config.sys, try the steps i laid out above, if you are not comfortable with them, that's ok, I will get back to this when I get home, prolly around 7:00pm PST, eg. 2.5 hours from now, where I have a Win98 PC, and can better walk you through what needs to be done.....

cool, i will check into my config.sys when i get home, and see how mine is laid out, and post that here, and maybe you can edit yours to match mine... ????

one way or another, we will get your cd-rom up and running again, or my names not Yosemite Sam.. oh wait, it t'aint.. sigh..

Hey Kanne,

Sorry, I got wrapped up in life over the weekend, and did not have a chance to log in and check back on this, sigh....

Anywho, thanks for posting your config.sys.

First thing that I can see, is what I have copied below...

The REM = Remove, and its in front of your CD-ROM drive, so doing the math, it appears that your CD-ROM was somehow removed from your config.sys. I think that you can remove the REM statement, and re-boot, it may sort itself out.

REM -----------------------------------

>REM [CD-ROM Drive] (THIS I WOULD REMOVE)<<<-----------

REM [Miscellaneous]

You may still have to go through windoze and remove the cd-rom from your hardware profile, using the steps that i laid out below.. then reboot, and your system should find the cd-rom, and ask if you want to install it, you will need to have a disk with the cd-rom drivers on it, preferably the orig. that came with the drive, if that is not available, check with the manufacturers website.

If you cannot find them, let us know, and we will find them for you.
