Hi, my computer has crashed again. Windows Me. Each time it has a problem reading data on c drive. Have run Norton disc doctor once and it found bad sectors. Crashed again, unable to read c drive again, can't read data. It all seems to point to hard disc. Ran disc doctor again and now it has found more bad sectors. It has also taken 18 hours and still hasn't finished. What causes bad sectors, I reload windows and it keeps coming back. Would formatting disc first help and how do I do it. The machine just came with an oem restore pack (floppy and cd) which I just insert, push a button and it does the rest. How do I use fdisk is this is the way forward. Is my hard drive broke, the computer is less than a year old.
Please ANYONE

Find out what brand of hard drive you have, then go to the manufacturers site and download their utility for drive checking, most if not all have a download that will check your drive without loosing the data.

either a bad drive or bad motherboard, that would be my guess

An increasing number of bad sectors is a sign of a HDD on its way out. If it's a pre-built machine and less than a year old, you may have a warranty that will replace the HDD. Contact their customer support and see what evidence they want of your failing HDD. If you don't have a warranty, try the HDD manufacturer ... they might replace a drive that is under a year old.

Good luck!
