Good Morning. I have a question concerning my clock speed. My machine is a Compaq SR1630NX, running Windows XP SP2. I am sending this text via a second machine. I recieve four different readings from four different sources. Computer properties, Everest, CPU-Z, and bios. I am including links to images to better explain. I have attempted to contact Compaq support but they seem to be awol, about a week now. I have heard that this processor may have (or it does have) a "Cool and Quiet" that could be causing the slow speed reading, but I have no idea what that is nor how to find out if this machine has it. I could not take a screen shot of the bios screen, but it read on the advanced screen:

Cpu type: AMD Athlon (tm) 64 processor 3500+
CPU Speed 2200MHZ
CPU L1 Cashe size 128mb
CPU L2 Cashe size 512mb
Plug and Play OS yes
Primary Video adapter PC1
Onboard Video Memory Size 64mb
PS/2 mouse Auto detect
Onboard 1394 enabled

Any information or advice would be appreciated. I am a novice in these matters but I will try to understand. As always, thank you in advance

Well, this could be caused do to how many programs you have running at the time as well different program use different methods of determining this..

download
CodeStuff Starter manage your startup programs

Disable all startup programs that you "do not" need running at startup.

not a huge difference in the speeds listed to really make a difference to worry about.

Disable all running processes not needed and run test again.

If you want Cool&Quiet disabled, it is done in the bios. You need to real your manual in regard to bios settings since each one is a little different as to where this setting is located. It should be under something like advanced chipset settings or health.
Note since this is a compaq, the bios settings are going to be limited.

If this is a laptop, I would leave it enabled. Lappys do not have much room to dissipate heat energy so I would not disable it.

For desktops, I always disable C&Q.

schusterjo that is a 3500+ with a normal clockspeed of 2.2gig. I would think anyone would be concerned if it was reporting that it was running @1gig or so; at least to find out why it is running at less than 1/2 the rated speed. The fsb is set to 200 so I doubt that it is a fsb issue.

Its a power management thing. if this is a laptop
When you have it plugged in to it's power source, set the power options to 'Always On'. This disables PowerNow and the chip runs at 2.2ghz all the time. When you use it on battery, set the power options to 'Portable/Laptop'. This setting turns power now on and lets the chip run as fast as it wants too. If you want some battery life, set the power option to 'Max Battery' and it will limit the chip

I was thinking laptop power management crjdriver, The stepping down of a 1G led me to instantly think laptop. This is why I posted that but looking at it closer I don't think it may be a laptop. says desktop
