My system: Athlon 800, slot A, 512 MB ram, 2 hard drives,
Win98SE;

Complaint: Computer won't run at all. I note the fans on the CPU
are sticking and will not turn. Motherboard LED's seem to cycle and hard drives run but no use.

Question: If fans quit and unit no run, is CPU fried? Is MB fried also?

Help would be appreciated. El Fasto! Thanks

Hi Earl, if the cpu fan isn't spinning or isn't spinning all of the time, I would look at replacing it muy rapido! Don't keep trying to start the computer, you'll only do more damage.

Athlons run HOT and need full time cooling. If the fan failed, you may have toasted the cpu. If the power supply is working as shown by its fan and the other drives spinning up, try what Rockin sugested about removing he cpu (carefully). If it is dead, the motherboard will still power up and give several beeps informing you that no cpu is present. You could take the cpu fan off and try to get it working. The label on the top or bottom side ususlly covers the bearings. A very small amount of machine oil will get it spinning again if it ran dry, but for the cost of a fan, i would still replace it with a new high quality one. They are alot cheaper than cpu's. The cpu, if you need to replace it, is listed for $57.00 on pricewatch currently.

Seems like the MB went south. A lot of the caps are blistered. I took it to a shop and they put in a new MB, and are now
re-installing all the drivers etc. They also said the proceesor is OK
I'll see tomorrow when I pick it up. Thanks for the help.
