I have a large Word Perfect file that I want to put on a CD. This CD will be sold to several - maybe 50 - folks. I want to prevent the CD from being copied to another media (hard drive, CD, etc) but I want it to be printable and/or even readable.

Is this possible?? Thanks, Bob

Possible.. But not easy.. Only way I can think of doing it is useing multiple forms of copy protection. I'd use a total hash of the TOC or the CD-roms serial to act as a PGP encryption key, or maybe even a password protected zipped file based on the cd's serial.. Someone could still make a image of the CD including the TOC and serial, but it'd be a whole lot harder.. Even then, unless you wrote your own viewing app, they could still just hit file/save as/ and save it to thier hard drive..

There's a sample of useing a CD's serial as protection here: http://www.codeproject.com/win32/cdcheck.asp

Nero has a tool which can read the serial of blank CDR's.. Can't remember the name of it though..

It would slow down the duplication process, unless you wrote some kinda macro to automate the process..

I've also seen a few freeware protections, you might google for some to try..

While you might protect the CD, if it's printable, it's pretty easy to print to a PDF and have the contents anyway in machinable form anyway. I think you are looking for a something that's going to be pretty difficult to achieve.

All that I can think of is that you could write your own viewing software and your own file ext (if that's possible) but give extreme limitations on the program, like no copy, paste, save, print, or anything, and with your own file ext nobody could use another program to view it.
