Ok i'm less ignorant now. I've got my turntable set up, and a program to record the audio source and edit the .wav file, and that works, and i have a program to convert the files from .wav to .mp3 and THAT works. I'm having problems getting it to record both channels. right now it is only picking up one. could it be that i have the rca jacks in a converter and it is going into the mic port onto my computer? how can i remedy this?

By converter, do you mean a Y with 2 female RCAs, and 1 stereo mini? If so, make sure that the mini is a stereo, and not mono. A stereo jack will have 2 black rings on the conector, and a mono will only have 1. If the jack is mono, you will only pick up one channel.

Jack, That brings to mind a question you may be able to answer. Is the mic in a stereo or mono input?

As far as I know it is stereo, at least on my laptop it is. I use a similar setup to connect a cassette player to the laptop, then the laptop to my stereo receiver.
