Convert FNT to OTF or TTF?

2118 Views 124 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Peachykeen
I have an old DOS program that sends FNT font files to the printer. Is there a way to convert FNT fonts to OTF or TTF?
Thanks!

I understand you need a break from this.
Sometimes it is best to leave something and come back later.
If you do decide to come back to this thread, a point or two if I may.

1) There is no point trying to print to LPT unless you can get it to print via usb cable.
2) The Oki c711 should work as I assume this is most likely a rebadged Oki
3) When sharing I would make the share name something simple like LPT (no space after the T)
4) I need to test this, but I think on a restart/shutdown of the computer causes the command to drop off
so, the Net use lpt command would need to be done after each start up. A simple batch file can do this from 1 click.
5) For what you need to print a PCL file is fine.
And interestingly, I turned the printer on first and it asked for a driver for RICOHP C301W. Of course, there isn’t a driver for XP that I could find.
I have one and installed the printer as an Ricohp C310W on XP

I am sorry I could not help you to get this printing.
If you do decide to try again after a break, I am more than happy to continue trying to help if you would like.
Or we could ask someone else to have a look at the issue.
Cheers

I can use the printer with my newer computers. I haven't found a way to run the software successfully with a newer OS. Using PrintFil and DOS Box a few years ago was the closest I got.

I can just keep using the closest font I have and manually type each page - thank goodness there aren't too many pages in each book, and I can do a "find and replace" for the personalization.

If I have lots to print at one time, I'll set up a merge file and cross my fingers. :)

Thank you so much for all your time and help! You went above and beyond, for sure, PeterOz!

I heard from AK-NORD. The cable is 74.52€ and shipping is 39€.

I was hoping shipping wouldn’t be so much.
I also hope they’re a reputable company if I decide to order it.
What is the software

Do you know anyone in Germany or around Germany who can buy it for you?
Ask them do they have a reputable reseller in the USA

I’ll ask them about a reseller. Good idea.
The software is for personalized children’s books that I got in the early 90’s. Merge the names, age, town, etc. with pages in the books. Then I assemble the books with their pages and covers.
has the software got a name
Do you have a computer running windows 7
Do you have a computer running windows 7
I need to check - I might have a laptop that runs Win 7.
The software is About You Books.
Might be able to set printer up in windows 7 via usb
Then install Microsoft XP mode on windows 7
Install program in xp mode.
Just a thought
You say other computers print to printer ok.
Do they do this via network printing?

I’ve printed from my Win11 computer. I just set it up not long ago - it’s connected with the USB cable when I print.

I’ll look into setting up XP on the Win 7 computer if I still have it.

Why not print via wi fi
I can't find that software to see how it works:(
Why not print via wi fi
I use an all-in-one that‘s connected to wifi. This Uninet one is so new, I haven’t really had time to set it up totally. It came with rip software because it’s used mostly for printing garments, mugs, towels, etc., etc. That will be a learning curve in itself.

The old DOS software was written with a compiler. I could send you a copy but I would get in trouble due to copyright protection.
That s fine work with what you got

I may have a simple solution.
1) Can your xp computer talk to your win11 computer.
2) If not do you have a win 10 comp.
3) Do you know how to use ping
I haven’t tried getting the XP to talk to the Win 11.

I have a Win 10 computer

Is pinging just entering my isp in the internet search bar?

The first obstacle in running this DOS program has been the batch file sending the print job to LPT1.

You mean on anything but XP ?
Have you used the new printer on windows 10
or do you have another laser printer setup on win 10.
On either win 10 or win 11 whichever one you have a laser printer attached.
open the command prompt.
Either copy or paste what is in blue. red is what you do
ipconfig /all Enter
This will give you a list you are looking for IPv4
It will look like 192.168.0.1 OR 10.0.0.1
Write down the ip number.
Go to xp machine
open cmd prompt

ping [the number you found] Enter
Do you get a reply or a fail
If you are up to giving it another shot at sometime. Whenever you like.
I may have a simpler solution.
You have the printer that works on win 10 & or win 11? I'm not sure if both.
If we can get XP to talk e.g Win 10 we then print from XP to the printer setup on that computer.
No need to install any printer on xp.
I have tested this with xp and win 8.1.
Can't test with 10 - Comp just died
