Convert FNT to OTF or TTF?

2117 Views 124 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Peachykeen
I have an old DOS program that sends FNT font files to the printer. Is there a way to convert FNT fonts to OTF or TTF?
Thanks!

I found a few different from Peter's.

If you get errors, please post what the error says so we can perhaps pinpoint the problem.

Thanks so much! The first website says "Can't determine the type of the input file" (one of the filenames I'm trying to convert is FONT1.FNT. The others are just different sizes of the same font.)
The second one just gave a general error msg.
The third one doesn't see to have a place to upload the files.
Thanks again!
FONT1 sounds generic.
If you have an image of the font, you can upload it here
and the site determines what it is.

The third link was not an upload site. It gave directions.
Font Rectangle Parallel Circle Number

Unfortunately, it doesn't show any way in any operating system to open an FNT file.

Thank you! I’ll see what “whathefont” says.
Just from recent checks in my installed fonts, it is very similar to Century or Century Schoolbook. It’s between regular and bold in boldness.
Thanks again!!

File.org didn't recognize the FNT file. I have to match the font my software uses because there are pre-printed pages using the font. Hopefully, the alternate font won't be noticed.
Thanks again for your help!!
I opened the FNT file in wordpad. I read that if it's binary, it isn't meant to be opened?
I see lots of computer symbols in the file. At the top pf the symbols, I see it was from Digi-Fonts and called "DF Century" - slightly different from the version on my computer. I'll just have to use the closest I can find. I was so hoping it could just be converted to OTF or TTF.
Thanks again for all the help!
Here's the digifont page
It looks like they are not free.

Century font family

Good luck. I'm sure you'll be able to find one close to what you had. There are several sites that have thousands of free fonts to download.

I would pay if I could find the right one. The DigiFonts link doesn't have a list, so I'll just use the one that's closest if I can't find it elsewhere.
Oddly enough, the boldness looks correct when I print using my inkjet, but the paper I have to use isn't made for inkjets and will smear. 😕
Thanks so much again for all your time and help!

Inkjet use the same paper as laser printers just plain bond.

I have preprinted pages I have to use I tried it and the inkjet ink smears if I dampen my finger. These are for children, so they will probably get smeared. 😩
what happens if you photocopy a preprinted page onto bond
and then print on that page.

I had considered that but using similar paper. I have way too many pages. These are personalized books with one side of each page already printed. The old DOS program (a merge print type of program) will run on my old XP computer, but the laserjet I have is old, too, and isn’t picking up the paper. The program sends the FNT font to the printer via LPT1, so I can’t run the program with my new laser printer. I tried Printfil a couple of years ago, but couldn’t get it to work.
Converting the FNT file was a last-ditch effort so I could use my new laser printer. So I just have to retype the pages with personalization without being able to use merge printing - ugh. And I will just have to use Century or Century Schoolbook, hoping it won’t look too different. I’m a perfectionist and fontaholic, so I need to let it go.
I do appreciate all your time and help so much!
XP computer, but the laserjet
Make and model of laserjet that works on xp please.

Why can't you use merge printing?
Do you have Microsoft office?

It's an HP2200D. The paper (7.25"H x 6.5"W) needs to be fed through the manual tray (according to software setup), but I've tried the bottom tray as well with no luck in getting it to feed correctly without having margins wrong on some of the pages. Can't figure out why margins are correct on some of the pages.
Thank you!

I have a MS Office (out of date, but still works). I haven't set up merge printing in years, so I might be better off setting up each book as I sell them.
Sorry for all the questions I just want to make sure I am clear and we are talking the same thing.
1) You have the program on xp and it sends the print job to HP2200D.
This is plugged in via a Parallel connection (large plug).
2) The paper does not feed through the HP2200D properly.
3) Did it ever feed through the printer properly before.

If you get a couple of pages (check more than two) and hold them up to the light
or put them on a window in daylight is the preprinted image in the same place.
