Very unusual. Have you lost access to the Control Panel?

Insert your XP CD. Exit when it autoruns.

Go to Start > Run, and type:

expand -r D:\i386\control.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\
OK.

Then:

expand -r D:\i386\control.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\
OK.

(if D: is your CD-ROM, C: is your system drive, and Windows is your installation folder).

Hi Elvandil, many thanks for the rapid reply,youre spot on about loss of access to the control panel, there was an earlier problem with a trojan coolwebsearch if I remember correctly,and it seems that this caused the problem ;)

Nice little visitor, wasn't it? Some people belong in jail (or "gaol" in West Midlands).

Let us know if extracting was enough to fix it.

And any error message when trying to access it?

Access to the Control Panel can be blocked in Group Policy in Pro.

In Home, that policy setting can be accessed through the REG_DWORD that is created in the registry:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoControlPanel

and its value set to 1. It must be changed to 0 to allow access, or the entry removed completely (unconfigured). This removes some Control Panel shortcuts and gives an access denied message when accessed through "control" in the Run box.

Any of these messages received?

OK. Looks like a problem with paths. But before we get into that, please open C:\Windows\System32 and look for control.exe to be sure it is there. If it is there, click it to see if the Control Panel opens and then continue below. If it is not there, STOP. Let us know.

Right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, Environment Variables button.
Scroll in the bottom window until you see "PATH" in the left column. Click on it so that it is highlighted and then press the Edit button below.

A new dialog box will pop up. The Variable Value will probably be highlighted. If so, right-click and copy it. If not, highlight the entire string and then right-click and copy it.

Paste the string in your post (or copy if from a different computer).

Just for the heck of it, do the same with the "PATHEXT" variable, please.

One more experiment. Go to Start > Run, and type:
desk.cpl
OK

Tell me if anything pops up.

This is the reply I got when I asked my friend to do as you asked

No, I cannot click onto Properties in My Computer. I get the same message as when trying to access any function in the Control Panel (i.e., Windows cannot access the specifed device, path or file). so I cannot post you what you asked

OK. Let's bypass control.exe and see what happens. This still depends on rundll32.exe being found. Have him record any errors and if this works, the information on environment variables that I asked for.

Go to Start > Run, and type:

sysdm.cpl
OK.

If the System Properties pop up, record the PATH and PATHEX variables.

---------------------------------

If that doesn't work, go to Start > Run, and type:
cmd
OK.

In the command window which opens, type:
set
<Enter>

Record the values following "Path" and "Pathext" in the listing of variables which results.

------------------------------------

If he is unable to do this, go to Start > Run, and type:
cmd
OK.

At the command window prompt, type:

SET PATH=%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\system32\WBEM (no spaces)

<Enter>

And then,

SET PATHEXT=.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH

<Enter>

Exit

<Enter>

Hi Elvandil,I got this message today about the problem and it looks solved,so thanks for your help on this....take care and have a good day

SUCCESS at last! I use AVG anti-virus and Kerio firewall. For reasons totally unrelated to the Control Panel problem I had to disable the firewall today and when I did it allowed me into the Control Panel. Apparently the trojan somehow attached itself to the firewall?? Anyway, I uninstalled and then reinstalled the firewall and now I have full access to the control panel

Stranger things have happened. In any case, the "fix" ia gave for the environment variables was not a very good one. That would have changed them only for one session.

They should have been changed in Computer Management to be permanent.
