I have Windows XP Home, my system was running fine, but this morning I got a message saying that winlogon.exe was corrupt and I should run CHKDSK, so I restarted my computer and it ran. After that my computer would just keep restarting. It would load Windows, but it would not load the logon screen. So I can't get into windows. Safe mode does also not work. What can I do?

Boot to the XP cd and choose "R"and then type in chkdsk /r
How to run checkdisk from recovery console (Windows xp). Courtesy dsenette

1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Note:Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Note:If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
3. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
4. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:

chkdsk /r

5. Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so)
6. Report any errors

In the end I just decided to reinstall Windows. For some reason I could not get into the recovery console (there was no option), because I wanted to do a repair reinstall. Then for some reason it installed another copy of Windows on the same partion. So i found that winlogon.exe was missing in my main install, and i tried taking it from the new one to the old one, but that did not work. So after that I just said to myself, that my system will run faster, it would probaly take more time to find the problem, and I would have a clean system, so then I reformatted my hard drive. Lucky for me I make backups daily, so all my files are still there. Thanks!!!
