Even though you didn't post the name of the game you're having trouble with, I'm going to guess that its......

Battlefield 2142

If that's correct, check out this post from when I had the same problem:

Make sure that you're playing with your anti-virus and firewall off, and that Windows updates are disabled while you play. Also, make sure your're not using a wireless connection (they tend to drop information, as I learned), and that you have a connection with at least 256kbs download speed.

I had a wireless connection with a reported speed of 2.5MPS and I still had this problem. I just ran a patch cable from the router to my computers ethernet port, and the problem ceased. Wireless connections are great for internet work, and perhaps MMORPG's, but FPS need lightning quick response and no dropped packets, otherwise you end up dead.

Here's a selection of patch cables of various sizes:

You should just be able to plug the cable into the router to make it work. Just make sure that you set up your computer to use the LAN connection to conect to the internet, and not your wireless. Simple way to check is to disable your wireless connection, and see if you can still browse the 'net. If you can, you're good to go.
