Hi,

Senario:

Home Network:

I have a wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) in home which is hocked up with a cable modem for the internet connection. My laptop along with another laptop and two PCs connect to the router.

Office Network:

I have another laptop in office which is connected to a DSL modem(Huawei SmartAX MT800).

Problem:

All the laptops and PCs, both in office and home, are assigned local IP addresses i.e. 192.168.1.*. Only the linksys router at home and dsl modem at office are assigned WAN IP addresses.

How do I connect from offices laptop to home laptop through:

1: Remote Desktop
2: VPN

Thanks in advance

Yes, remember you need XP Pro at the receiving end. Just went through a very long post were someone kept recommending using Remote Desktop to connect to a XP Home and ME computer.

For information on setting up a XP VPN server see:

Thanks.

For the home laptop I want to access through Remote Desktop over the Internet from the office laptop, it tells me I need to enter in the Public IP address of the HOST's Internet connection and I would also need to configure my router to forward the default port 3389 to the computer's LAN IP address.

1: How do I configure my Linksys WRT54G router to forward 3389 to the home laptop's LAN IP?

2: What if I need to access all the PCs and laptops at home from the office laptop through Remote Desktop? Would different ports would be required to farwarded for each machine?

Thanks

P.S. I have Windows XP on all the machines.

Thanks Bob for helping me so far.

The situation is that I am not being able to farward the port on from office adsl modem.

My local IP is 192.168.1.100, modems IP is 192.168.1.1

When I log in to the ADSL there are several setting options (Please refer to the attached screenshot.) I dont know whether or not I did the right thing, I clicked "NAT".

I clicked "Add" to add rule. There are three rules flavours: NAPT, DMZ, REDIRECT.

I selected redirect, Protocol: TCP, Local Address: 192.168.1.100, Destination Port From: Any other port 3900, Destination Port To: Any other port 3900 (Please refer to the attached screenshot.)

I am still not been able to get into the office laptop through Remote Desktop. Do I need to do something else?

Yes I am able to connect from my office laptop to my home laptop now ... thanks to you

The problem I mentioned is that I cannot connect from home laptop to office laptop.

It is due to the fact that I am not being able to set my ADSL modem to farward the port.

I have provided you with the details as to what I did. Suggesion/help needed :)

Thanks

Hmm ... i did check the manual ... it talks about NATing ... I tried it but it didn't work.

Maybe we should go step be step.

First thing I need to ask you is that was it right to chose NAT in order to do what I want to do. You can see the other options I had in the attached screenshot
