Connecting a Mac to a PC directly?

This may seem dumb, but is there any way to network a Mac (OS X) to a Windows 2000 PC without routers or other expensive things? The computers are sitting next to each other and all I really have is an ethernet cable. Is a direct connection even possible?

(The Mac has neither a LPT port nor a COM port)
