Hi all,

I want to connect to my business server from home. The server is a MS small busness server 2000, with all the info on an access database. The home laptop is XP based.

How easy is it to set up a VPN between the 2 across the internet?

There is a router and firewall on the server end running over adsl. home has a wireless router with cable internet.

Any good how too's greatfully accepted,

cheers

You need to start with the configuration of the home and office networks? What kind of routers and/or gateways do you have in each location to provide access to the Internet is one key question.

Hi John,

The server end has a Fortinet firewall with the following capabilities:-

ipsec
pptp
lt2p

So every thing seems to be there, I just dont know how to use it.

At home I have a wireless netgear router. Which specs do you need ?

Thanks for your interest, I can see you are very busy here.

Well, I'm assuming that the Fortinet firewall (model unknown) is capable of passing VPN traffic through, and most models of the Netgear router will as well. Here's the procedure to configure a VPN on your server: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb877981.aspx Then you'll have to configure the VPN client on your home system: http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/connectingtotheoffice/ht/vpnclient.htm Finally, you will probably have to port forward some port on the office firewall to allow the VPN to connect.
