I've read hours online, and i understand cars pretty well, i've been all over mp3car.com but the people there aren't helful when you post a theard all they say is "search!". Cars have them in nowadays anyways, and alot more advanced than you might think! Why would you seriously even WANT to? Music? there are what, 80GB Ipods out now? That means you can drive for literally over a month and a half all day, all night, and not hear a repeat.

New Mercedes Benz's come with Intel chips attached to cell phones and Mercedes Benz Germany can dial into any one of them and pull all kinds of info, including when the last maintenance was done. They then send you a letter stating when it is time to get an oil change. Crazy, and IMHO, scary stuff.

Give me an old 69 Camaro SS. All go, baby, that's all I need it for.

lol, Well its a show car guys. And i'm entering it into a show and the computer and the whole inside needs to be custom built from ground up. That means even the computer. And i found somone to help me, so no biggie. (it's not as hard as you think) Next month when i'm done i'll post pics. -cnelson.

No, I know it is not difficult. I used to own a performance shop and know it can be done. But really, ever hear of KISS? Keep It Simple Stupid? And, what kind of car are you building into a show car? Why? Racing (real racing) is SO much more fun.

Biggest pain would be finding a place inside the car to put the box. You'd have to keep in mind that the thing would be fed from power off the battery so you're not going to have a killer fast system in there. You can buy tiny powersupplies that fit on the ATX power connector going into the mobo to limit the size of the case needed. I don't remember the name of the thing but I think it is a 230w PS. There are also more expensive but less power consuming mini-ITX motherboard/PC combos out there.

You could do a lot with a car PC besides play music. You could play DVDs, use console emulators with a USB gamepad to play games, you could even put car monitoring or performance tweaking software on the PC and do all your ECU tweaks from that PC. Basically with the right software and the right connections you could forgo the need for a seperate ECU management system or other fuel/air controllers.

You'll have to use a power inverter to connect the PC to the battery.

If you really want to keep it simple you could just use a laptop inside the car, lol! I do that for sniffing wireless networks. You can buy mounting kits for laptops that you could use to make it a semi-permenant installation.

Sounds like a cop car I was in once - perhaps you can search for cop car computers

I have my Axim setup in my Yukon with a GPS, MP3 player and vehicle diagnostics/monitor the last toy was kinda pricey but I like it.

Back to the carputer project on occasion, two things, got one figured out the gps hack is cool. The other a fairly simple one I thought would be hacking into the cell phone antenna rather then having one those passive repeaters why can't I just us the external antenna already on the truck and plug into the jack on my phone I already use bluetooth so its hands free, just looking for more range some rural areas are bad but onstar still gets out
