I'm fairly new at this and I really hope someone can help me. I have windows 98 SE and love it but about two months ago I started having all kinds of problems, most of which I was able to resolve. Here is the first major problem I still have .....
I can connect to the internet but can't get any sites to come up. The computer doesn't send or receive bytes. I know that it is something within my computer because I borrowed my daughters computer and it works just fine. I have cleaned up my computer, ran scan disk, installed updates, ran Spybot, Easy Clean, defraged and everything thing else that I could think of plus did somethings that I read on this forum.
Sometimes if I reboot it will start working...like now, but then it just fades away again. I have 386 of ram and most of it is available, so I am at a complete loss. The other problem I now have is that I can not get Netscape to run. I have installed and uninstalled 4 times and also tried different versions, but nothing works.

Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help or advise I can get.

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Do these and reboot before the next step.

it in a permanent folder (C:\HJT) , run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
log here.

Thank you so much. I will do everything you said and I'll be back. One question, is there a trick to coping the log so I can post it on the forum? Sorry, I've never done this before...............thanks

No trick

Click on do a system scan and save a logfile

It will pop up a dialog to save the file to the folder it was run from - save it

Then go to that folder and double click the log it should open in notepad

If not opened in notepad then open notepad and browse to that file and open

Edit - Select All
Edit - Copy
Come here (TS Guy) and in your message thread go to the quick reply box at the bottom of the page - click in the white box and then Edit Paste

When you stated "I can connect to the internet but can't get any sites to come up", how are you determining that you can connect to the Internet.

Can you ping external sites by IP (e.g. ping 199.181.164.1) as well as by name (e.g. ping www.yahoo.com)?

If you can't access the Internet with programs like IE, Outlook Express, or other web browsers, you also may have corrupted Winsock entries.

To Remove the existing winsock2 registry entries (regardless of the OS) run:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/xp_del_winsock.reg

To add Win98 clean entries back in again, run:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/win98_winsock.reg

Well I just don't think I can get anything to go right at this point but.......... I did as you said and made a folder for HiJack This in C:\Program and it will not show up on it's own, it always goes in under another file name which in this case is under HP. I have tried everything and it continues to go back to the same place. So I thought, ok, at least it is in it's own file, but, when I try to run the program, it tells me to make a folder under C:\Programs............what am I doing wrong???
It's probably late for you, so I will check back in the morning.....thank you again

To Bob Cerelli - The computer is able to get online, it just won't keep a strong connection. The bytes go up and down and then just go away to the point that I might as well disconnect.
Sorry, I don't understand the other stuff that you asked or how to do it.

Not sure I understand all of that, but go ahead and run the HiJackThis.exe and post the log

Misti4u,

go to Start|settings|click control panel, ckick on add remove programs, select Microsoft Internet Explorer and click on the add remove button. Awindow will open with 3 selections. Select repair Internet Explorer. This should fix your problem with Browsing the internet. If not, there are other steps you can take.

I turned my computer on today and for no apparent reason the M:drive and N:drive have renamed themselves E: and F:
Could someone tell me why this would happen and how I can changed them back?
If you are kind enough to help me, please use layman's language because I really don't understand a lot of technical terms.

Thank you so much.

Not read all your thread yet,am going to now, just to put you right it is msconfig not mscinfig .....and E and F are more likely to be right than M&F .....

Do this as a temporary measure,go here,http://www.mozilla.org/ and download firefox which is a browser and see if you can use that OK ... you can always uninstall it later .......

I did run "MSCONFIG"........... and nothing. Anyway, I finally managed to get most things back to normal, "after 2 months" so the one thing I really need to address now is how to get my drive back to M & N instead of E & F................any ideas on this?
Thanks
