Computer won’t boot up

Hi!

I have a problem with my pc. I have a windows 8.1 Inspiron dell computer that won’t boot up properly at all. It started when I tried booting it up and was greeted by a “preparing automatic repair” loading screen, shortly followed by a “diagnosing your pc” loading that lasted forever and took probably half an hour before showing me a different screen saying; “your pc could not start properly”. It gave me two options ; restart or advanced options , but I when clicked either one one of them, the screen freezes and I can’t get past that point. I have tried using the F12 options, but they don’t seem to work. I have a suspicions that it tried to install an update and restart, but something went wrong, which is probably why the power was off when I tried to use it. Do I need to use a windows repair/reinstall disc or completely reset the system to factory settings? Can my computer be saved?

Under Advanced Options, do you have the ability go into safe mode? If so, choose Safe Mode with Networking. It may be an update that is hung up.

I tried clicking on advanced options and using the key command, but the screen froze again.
What is the serial number of your Dell Machine?

As for F12, that should still work before it hits the the hard drive. As soon as you turn on the machine, you need to tap F12 almost rapidly until it shows Loading Boot Menu Options in the top right.

If you can get there, then run the diagnostics.

I'm not sure if this is the serial code, but the service tag is 9Q9XNW1

As for the f12 command key, I've opened the diagnostics menu, and it's currently testing. What do I do when the test is finished?
I was meant to say service tag... still not used to it even though I have been dealing with Dell for a long time..

This is your machine - this is for reference if we need it.

Basically I am looking to see if the diagnostics will show any issues with the RAM or HDD. Are you given any options within the Automatic Repair to load up last known good configuration?

No, it's saying that the short test was unsuccessful and that there's an issue with the hard drive. Everything else seems to be okay.

Did it give an error code?

From what information you have given thus far, I think the drive is starting or has malfunctioned and a new one is needed.

The error code is 2000-01 42
OK, so the error is showing either the HDD, HDD cable, or connector on the motherboard. Open the system, reseat the HDD and HDD cable. Run the PSA/ePSA test again. If you get the same error, then the hard drive is the problem and will need to replace it.
