My computer takes an extremely long time to boot up. I know I may have too many things opening at startup, but when I run msconfig I get an errorbox that says it cannot find the file.

Also it's not just slow on boot up but all the time. Takes forever to open applications and even when typing in word or any application, even techguys.org messages, there is a delay from when I type to when the text appears on the screen. Seems like every click results in an hourglass.

I have Win 2000 with a Pentium III processor. I have a 40 gig hard drive with just under 6 GB's free space.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You also are infected. Remove an old anti-virus you have and get AVG Free from Grisoft or get eTrust here: www.my-etrust.com/microsoft It's free for 1 year.

Notice you are from Dekalb, another fellow Illinoisan

Thanks, Yes, you commented on an issue of mine once before I was getting ready to see our Kane County Cougars play your Peoria Chief's minor league team. We lost :mad: , but it was fun.

Actually I've had Norton which I thought was one of the best, but interestingly I've been having some problems with it. I e-mailed their tech support and they said they no longer support my 2004 Norton. I wonder why they didn't tell me that when I paid for my renewal last fall. I will try AVG. I've heard good things about it.

I am wondering though if there isn't something more than that so I'll see what other comments I might get.

dont get avg yet. I dont know if you are infected but you are running out of space. have you tried to defrag and do disc cleanup?

If you have done all the house cleaning and have run anti spyware then you may have an infection then and you would want to run Hijack This which will help to indicate if there is an infection and then a log expert can help you with that

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required

Please see my HTJ logs (and others) posted from this thread from last week where another member was helping me clean up. It definitely helped, but the computer is still having problems obviosly. http://forums.techguy.org/security/483222-brave-sentry-help-hjt-log.html.

Anyway, I'm running a defrag tonight and will do disk clean up, and then post a new log after that.
