I put together a new system but when we turn it on, it would stay on for about half a minute and then it shuts down on us. When I turn the computer back on i get a message or warning saying something like "the previous over clocking option failed...." Can't read the entire thing because the comp shuts down shortly after the message appears. No operating system is currently installed since it wont let us. We really need help on this so please help ASAP, it is really appreciated.

Computer Specs:

MSI P965 Platinum
Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz
250 GB hard drive
DVD Dual Layer LG
512 MB Sapphire ATI Radeon x1300 DDR2(or G)
425W power supply

We know its not the power supply since we tried a 600 W and we had the problem but we switched to the 425 and it went on longer than the 600. With the 425 it stayed on for a period of 5 min and then I shut it off myself. Then when i turned it back on it started giving me the same problem as above.

sounds like overheating. How much thermal paste did you use?

I'm unclear. You didn't put any thermal paste down, just using what was on the Fan? What about the heat sink? I'm really beginning to think that this is an overheating issue.

The comp is actually staying on and it is loading the windows pro cd, but the problem now is that when it finishes loading all of the drivers on the xp cd in order to go into the installation screen, i get the famous blue screen of death. I have never gone around this issue before, is there an y way to fix it?

what is the error on the blue screen? Post the error and hex that goes with it. That way we can diagnose what is what.

The error is as follows:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing the video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer Press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

do you have sp2 installed yet? If not, install it and give it another go.

okay, let's back up. Your install disk; does it have sp1 or sp2 slipstreamed on it? Either one of those should fix that issue.

Check BIOS settings, make sure they are set to AUTOmatic or default. Your timings are set for Overclocking which in turn can causes memory corruption and of course system restarts.

Or for some odd-reason you bought a used CPU that you think is a 3.2 that is actually something else.... dunno.

1. Service pack 1 or 2 will not do anything because I can't even install windows
2. My CPU is brand new because I bought it myself unopened and closed
3. My DVD drive isnt dying and neither is my hard drive. They are both brand new also the Ram isnt a mismatch.

That isn't what I asked. I asked if the disk had sp1 or 2 slipstreamed ON it. That would make a difference.
