By any chance, have you overclocked your system? If so, try lowering down the FSB speed. Also, look on your motherboard for bent capacitors, (they look like batteries in plastic) burn marks, and cracks. That could be the problem, also.

Do you have an antivirus? If not, go to www.grisoft.com and download the free version of AVG antivirus, update the data file, and scan for viruses.

Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Do you remember the date or around it when this wasn't happening? Click on or before that data when you know it was working, and let it restore to that point. I would back up your data, first.

If none of this works, you may need to run System Recovery, or a fresh or repair install of Windows.
I have done nothing to my system. I tried System Restore, but it would not go back far enough to get past the date the problem started. I have Nortons System Works and the latest virus definitions from Nortons Antivirus and I have run them several times since the problem started. I have also checked for spyware, etc. with Adaware and Spybot. Hod do I do a System Recovery and/or a repair of windows. I only have the OEM disks that came with the computer and they are not the original WinXP Home disks. Help!
When you boot up, are there two options...:

Windows XP
System Recovery

?

If so, boot into system recovery, and follow the directions (I would back up your data first)

If not, go to Start>All Programs>Acessories>System Tools>System Recovery. It will do the same.

If you wanted a repair, pop in your OEM CD's and boot from them. There should be an option for System Restore or a repair installation. Select that.

Hope this helps!
