I have a HP Palivion computer (2 years old or so) which was running fine until yesterday. I turned it on and monitor does not get past the HP Invent splash screen. It seems as though it is booting normally, the keyboard lights flash, the hard disk makes sounds and lights up, it checks floppy drive, it checks CD/DVD drives. If I didn't look at the monitor I would think it booted normally. I have not made any hardware changes recently. The last one was adding an ATI 800XL graphics card 1 year ago. It has Windows XP SP2 installed.

If I press F8 or F10 the screen does not indicate it went into setup, if I hit F1 before the splash screen, the splash screen pops up, says entering setup and then stays on the HP splash screen. I connected a different monitor and got the same result.

I talked with HP support and they said to reseat the memory, remove and reinstall the cmos battery, reseat the hard disk connections. Nothing helped. They said it was probabily the hard disk.

I took the hard disk and put it into a different computer, as master it said it did not shut down properly and either start in safe mode or normally. Either option will restart the computer and ask again to boot in safe/normal mode.

When I made it a slave Windows XP installed it and I was able to access it and copy my inportant files to the other hard disk.

I would really appreciate any help. I had virus problems 1 year ago and this site was the only one to really help me.

Thank You

Howdy,

Do you have the Operating System on CD?

If you do you can try either getting into the Recovery Console or doing a Repair Install

Let us know what you want to do if you have the CD.

I would say probably one of these
1. Bad bios battery and need to have it replaced (Walmart, Radio shack ext.. watch battery section) they already had told you to pull it out, but they should of told you to check the date/time in the bios, this would of told you right away the bios battery was dead. but after resetting it probably wrong now.
2. Bad power supply

Make sure you get a PS made for HP

3. Hard drive

May be able to run it on another computer.

I would look into those as being the possibilities

How old is the machine.? I am sure there is nothing wrong with the Hard disk or the installation. It does seem that HP are partially correct but, my most pessimistic opinion is a blown bios chip, which can be very difficult to replace. It rarely happens, but one other possibility is a partially dead bios battery. Are you able to measure it in any way? Otherwise, at the risk of giving your self some more work, try the battery from the machine that is working. But keep in mind that whilst doing that you may lose your customised settings on that machine, and have to set it up again.
Third offer is that you have a problem with the power to the HD. I guess you have checked the plug is firmly in etc but how about swapping over to one of the other power "tentacles"
P.S. (Later)Sorry, I wrote this whilst shustterjo was posting - a little duplication of effort!

I made recovery disks maybe 6 months ago. I am not able to boot from the cd drive (it just goes to the HP splash screen)

The entire computer behaves like normal when it's starting up, if it wasn't for the screen frozen on the HP Splash screen I would believe that the computer is load normally.

The machine is about 2 1/2 years old.

Added 512m of ram 1 year ago for total of 1G of ram.
Added Ati 800xl graphics card at the same time.
Replaced DVD writer 5 months ago (stopped working)

Those are all the changes made to this computer.

I do not get any errors. Everything starts and sounds like usual, but the only display I get is the HP Splash screen. It's almost like the signal sent to the monitor stops at that screen while the computer boots up normally.

Is it possible that it's booting up ok, and when I hit F1,F8 or F10 it's working but the signal for some reason is not getting to the monitor ?

Thanks
