PLEASE HELP!!!!!

My HP Pavillion XT 936 gave me an error messge, that said my CPU fan was not working, and that it was going to shut off in 5 seconds to stop it from overheating...and it did shut right off.

I took it to my techno buddy, who sat it on his desk...and of course, it worked fine...I took it home, and it gave me the same error message and I looked inside...fan was off.

******* me, wasnt thinking it had a thermostatic switch, and I Replaced the fan...plugged it in WITHOUT my monitor...and of course, NEW fan works perfect...runs with no problem, (just like the old one duh).

So. HEREIN lies the problem, The Second I plug my monitor in, I get the old error message and it shuts off in 5 seconds. Why does my computer hate my monitor?? HOW DO I FIX THIS???

Do you have to push hard to plug in the monitor, or is the plug touching the side or anything? This sounds like a short to me, meaning the mobo is shorting on the case or similar, shorting the fan control or something. Just a guess, but worth checking out.

Unplug the monitor from the machine, then power it on. When you are sure it has booted, very very very gently, plug in the monitor, using almost no pressure...see what happens (this is assuming you don't need to wiggle it to plug it in or anything).

Thanks very much for trying.

The connection appears simple and not worn, no obvious shorts in the connection. It plugs in easily. I am isolating this problem by trying a new monitor.

I am unclear on what part of the computer system tells the computer that the fan is not on...particularly..when its working fine. Further, I am unclear on why this only happens when the monitor is connected and no problem exists until the monitor is plugged in.

Any ideas are better than the ones Im considering...now where did I put that hammer??

Sorry...I should have been a bit clearer....I don't think the monitor cable has a short. I meant that when the cable is plugged in to the system, it 'may' be putting pressure on the vid card or motherboard, and causing a short or disconnect somehow. This is why I said to plug the cable in very very gently...keeping it straight, and watching to see if it snags on the case or otherwise....on some cases, where the vid card is, they recess the area, and the cable may be pressing against the side, so putting pressure on the board, so causing a problem.

This is a very long shot, but all I could think of really......

Rich, are you thinking perhaps that the on-board is interfering with the fan somehow?

Is it possible that the draw from the VGA (when the monitor gets plugged in) is what's raising the cpu temp, and causing the subsequent shutdown?
