Hey guys

So I was using my computer yesterday when it randomly shut off. When I tried to turn it back on, nothing was appearing on the monitor. I could hear the hard drive and fans spinning, but there was no display. After i tried to turn it back on, my room smelled strongly of something electronic burning and i quickly shut it off.

Earlier today I tried to turn it on again. The monitor was working this time, and it tried to start windows in safe mode. About 5 seconds into the Windows XP loading screen, i smelled something burning again and the computer shut itself off on its own.

Anyone have any idea what's going on and/or how to fix it? My best guess would be a bad power supply, but my knowledge of computer hardware is pretty slim, so some input from people who know what they're doing would be nice before i go out and start spending money. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

First view would be Power Supply, then either the fan on your graphics card or the graphics card itself.

It could be the monitor though, to eiagnose this. Try the computer with a different monitor and monitor with a different computer.
