[Seven of 98]

Hi! Well what happened was I got a computer from a friend and it had Win 2000 on it, and it had some good and bad points, one bad point it was slow. So one night a friend of mine, and a computer tech geek (he LOVES messing with computers) tried installing and DOWNGRADING it to Win 98 to make it faster, especially the web (and this is AOL we're talking about.) Of course a problem can and did happen. The color setting refusing to be on anything else but 16, not 256, not High, just 16. Well this is causing me problems. So does anyone know how to fix this? I love being back to 98, but if anyone could help fix this problem, I'd love it even more, and yes I tried opened to settings and tried several times to fix it it, but it ask to reset and when it did it was still on 16. And the screen is stuck at 640X480 too. Can anyone help or will my computer be like this forever?

You need to locate and install the drivers for your graphics(video) adapter.

Without the correct drivers, your display will be exactly as you describe.

First and foremost is to download and install the updated video drivers as mentioned above.
Then consider:
I had a similar problem when I put in a new video card. I used the disk that
came with it to provide the drivers and they were already obsolete. Even
then, I downloaded newer drivers and still couldn't get it out of 16 colors.
I took the video card out and tried to return it and was told that after you
have the video card in, most current drivers downloaded, you need to change
the adapter refresh rate. For some reason the adapter refresh rate defaults
to "unknown" and as long as that's what it is set at you can't get out of 16
colors. I took the card home, reinstalled it and darn if it wasn't true. I
changed the adapter refresh from "unknown" to "adapter default". apply
reboot; then changed it from "adapter default" to "optimal" and apply,
reboot. (You have to do this in increments because if you go from "unknown"
to "optimal" it defaults back to "unknown". Try right clicking on
desktop>properties> settings tab> advanced button> adapter tab and change it if on "unknown". Just worth a try. But keep in mind that you may need updated drivers from maker's web site.

There are several ways to identify your video card, (or you may have on-board video, part of your motherboard and need to install VIA chipset drivers for your motherboard) if you don't know what kind of video card you have, or if you don't know where to find the updated drivers..
