do you know photoshop?
I would create all the photos and rotate/trsnsform to the angle you want - and then copy them into a master file as layers . then you move to where you want them
Not really a grid you drop images into
you can align each layer to where you want it to give the effect you are after
then crop the final image to get a rectangle
flatten and save as jpg or png for the final image

I have been experimenting using Photoshop to create this effect using layers. I see what you mean about using rotate and transform to shift the images angles to the desired position. I'm going to continue to experiment with this and perhaps see what else I can learn along the way. Thanks for your help.
