Codecs

What's up with Windows Media player? I do CG work, and a lot of the compression codecs used are .. all different, basically. So, downloading unspecific .avi's to view of animation shorts, when I try to open them in WMedia Player, it just goes to searching for the codec, sending a request, and *always* coming up blank. Then, if the animation is tried again, it just immediately offers nothing but "Unable to playback media file: suitable decompressor could not be found". Thus I'm unable to discern which codecs to actually use , or even download (from where, even!). Help, please?

one place you can go is here and download the Kristal studio DivX codec 4.33, It should let you watch most movies. I know this site is foreign language but its the first one that popped up, theres more in english that have this codec just search for it.
