close programs at startup

I have probably ten programs running when I start my computer. I would like to pare them down to three or four. I have Weather Bug, which I like, and a few others that I will keep. Should I keep msn Messenger? Is there a program running that helps me on the internet that I may not be aware of? A little discussion would be appreciated, but my main goal is to stop the automatic activation of most of the programs at bootup.I run xp home.
Thanks, Phil

As long as you know which ones you would like to stop, it is fairly simple.

Click Start> Run > type msconfig into the box > start-up tab.
This is a list of the things that start with Windows. Uncheck the ones you wish to stop. When you restart, they will not. They are not uninstalled, they will still run from the programs menu, just not during start-up.
Thank you Longhair, I knew that it would be easy but my problem is that I dks (don't know s***). What about my other question? Are there programs that most people like to have open at start up. Just askin'.
It depends on what you use, but most people around here recommend the minimum. It will make your computer start faster. You should keep your Anti-Virus in start-up, the same with a software Firewall, other than that the only things you have to keep are Windows Explorer and Task Manager.
There was another question like this posted today. It was recommended to go to:

If your looking to stop automatic activation of programs, you should really check out this thread. Just shutting them down in msconfig is not always the answer.
