Hell all I have the XP CD trying to do a clean install. However, when I go thru the steps things are good until it starts to copy file from the CD the th harddrive. I get the message " cannot copy xxx file .. skip it or retry" i get that for almost every file. I try to skip the onese that have that message but it seems to be almost every file.

Any thoughts?

The most common cause ( in order )

Dirty or scratched install cd
Using a copy of an install cd vs. the original
Bad memory
Bad CD drive
Bad hard drive

Already installed on your computer
Reinstalltion CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 2

Sounds like a Dell? . . yes . . that is what you sh0uld be using. You can wash the cd with warm slightly soapy water with very gentle motions . . then Try taking out all but one stick of memory to see if it works better . . Installing XP stresses the memory more than any other operation
