For Christmas, I got a DI-604 D-link ethernet router. It is a refurbished router.

I've been using my home compter, and an "efficient networks" speed stream 5360 adsl modem.

My computer runs windows ME, our secondary computer runs Windows 98.

I used the guide provided wth the DI-604 router to hook up both computers to it. I am sure I had the original computer on the net through the router at one time, but haven't gotten it to do so since.

The secondary computer has never talked through the router. I have gotten it on to the net via the same adsl modem that I'm currently using with the primary computer.

I've tried powering everything down, and powering on in different orders, hitting the little reset button in the router, realeasing and renewing with Ip config.

I've done everything I know to do. The warranty for the refurbished router is only for 1 month, and it was purchased pre-christmas - so my time may be running out. Also, friends have the same router and same asdl modem, and their hookup was just plug and play - they didn't have to do anything.

I just found this forum and had excellent help with some MSN and spyware and trojen troubles - so I figured I'd ask here about the router modem trouble.

Your help is hugely appreciated!

When you plug your computers into the router what IP address are they pulling?

Also, you could try logging into the router via its IP address and see if you need to configure anything...which you usually have to do.

I'd start by resetting the router to factory defaults and starting the configuration over. Do you need a name/password for your ADSL service? If so, you'll need to configure that into the router on the WAN setup page. This should be real simple to get going...

refurbished means someone had a problem with it.

unless you got a warranty with and if resetting to factory defaults doesn't work, you've had an expensive lesson in refurbished equipment and i wonder how much you saved in comparison to the same model new?

Thanks very much for the information. Sorry for my delay in getting back to this, I’ve been occupied with other things over the weekend.

IP Configuration

Primary
Realtek 8139-series PCI NIC
Adapter address 00-40-F4-70-B2-CA
IP address 192.168.01.101
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1

Secondary
Realtek 8139-series PCI NIC
Adapter address 00-0A-CD-01-97-81
IP address 192.168.01.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1

When I click more info, both show the same DNS server number, but the secondary computer does not have a check next to the IP Routing enabled.

I have reset the router, done the release renew, powered down router and DSL modem, restarted the computers – but have not got either computer talking through the router. I had to hook the primary computer back up to the DSL modem.

When I am hooked up this way, and hit release renew, it shows the following.

Realtek 8139-series PCI NIC
Adapter address 00-40-F4-70-B2-CA
IP address 64.201.223.66
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 64.201.223.254
DHCP Server 206.163.254.254

I will check in tonight and tomorrow to try anyones ideas, it would be really nice to have both computers on the internet right now.

Thank you very much

In your router it should have some spot that tells you its WAN info.

With the router attached to the DSL modem connect to your router (with one of the PC's and see what the WAN is showing it should be somewhere in the 64.201.XXX.XXX area. If it is not then your router is not passing information to and from the WAN and will be useless.

Basically I have seen alot of routers fail at this very point (where they can work internally but anything external can't pass data).

I'm not sure I fully understand. The router does not seem to say anything about WAN info, except to have a green led for WAN (which is on) There is certainly no WAN indication other than the green light.

I connected the router to my primary PC, and did the release renew, but it didn't tell me anything new.

I hope I was understanding you correctly. If I missed something, please feel free to explain it to me like the router idiot I am.

Thanks for your help

Open up IE and go to the setup pages for your router. The Status page should show you the WAN connection info.

If you select the Home tab, you can click on the WAN button and check/change the WAN configuration.

Figured out what the problem was.

The eithernet cable was not securely in place in the back of the modem. All my troubleshooting and banging my head on the wall for a loose cable. And none of you mentioned that, so nyah! - I figured it out before you guys did :)

Thanks for trying to help

Well, we didn't have the advantage of actually being next to the physical hardware. It's hard to see the back of your modem from here.
