Chasing icons

Hi all
I came in to my office computer after being out yesterday to find that I can't click on any desktop icons. They run away from the cursor! This computer is left on all the time and others use it for email. I shut down and restarted several times to no avail. I tried looking in the startup menu, but didn't see anything obvious.
I may have overlooked something. Could this be a virus or is someone playing a joke on me. When I look in the task menu there isn't anything running.

HELP!
Thanks
Ringwood
