Charging Problems

420 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Digerati
My HP Laptop only charges when it is turned off. Is there any chance anyone knows if there is something I can do? Does the battery need to be replaced or is there something else that can be causing the problem?

What is the exact model/serial number ?
When did this problem start?

And is that the original charger? If not, does it have the same (or greater) current/wattage capability as the original charger?

A laptop charger "should" have enough capacity to charge and operate the laptop at the same time. Charging times may increase, but it should still charge. If a replacement charger has a lower capacity, it may not be able to support charging and operating - and actually can result in a hazardous situation. If the demand on the charger is too great, it may overheat. For this reason, replacement chargers should always have at least the same current capability. More is fine, less is not. Voltage must always be the same.

Does the battery need to be replaced or is there something else that can be causing the problem?
No way of telling at this point. This could be the result of a failing battery (demanding too much current), a fault in the laptop's charging circuits, or a failing/inadequate charger.

I suppose this could also be a simple setting in the power options - but I have never seen that option.
