Certificate for wiping business drives

404 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  zx10guy
Hi,

My friend is having a load of PCs recycled from his company, I asked if I could have them and he said no because he needs a company to give him an official certificate to prove that the hard drives and sensitive data from the PCs has been wiped.

What is such a certificate called and do you need a license to be able to give them out?

Surely I could just wipe the drives myself?

Most company IT dept require a given number of wipes on a drive. Where I work, it is a 7 pass wipe with random characters however everybody is different.
Surely I could just wipe the drives myself?
I am sure you could however do you have business insurance to cover a lawsuit from someone recovering data then the original company suing you?
He's probably referring to a letter of volatility. This is a common place requirement in the Federal circles.
