Shutdown the pc, open the case and check the connection on both the cdrom and floppy drives. Then reboot and while booting look to see if any lights flicker on either ofthe drives..

So windows detects the cdrom and the floppy as per "my computer"
The power light flickers on reboot

Next would be to have him check in device manager for any errors there.

I just got back. The floppy disk was saying (not accessible) because they didn't have a floppy disk inserted. (lol!) but as for the CD ROM drive goes, it says (CD ROM not attached to this machine) Although there is a cd rom in the device manager and it says (this device is working properly)...there is a floppy disk icon in "my computer", but there is NO CD ROM in there. They will probably need the restoration floppy from Compaq? How can they reinstall windows98 if the cd rom drive isn't attached? I will let them borrow my windows98 cd..they didn't get one with the comp.
