Tried installing Norton Internet security on my Windows XP based computer. I tried installing via the CD ROM and DVD drives. Both times, the Installation window opened and I selected the "INSTALL" options, but then the drives stop responding. I've defragmented the computer and did a "Disk Cleanup". Still not difference. One note, sometimes on startup, I see a brief message about my harddrive a fatal error. The message does not consistently appear and disappears before i can read it all.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Immediately get all files off your machine to a flash drive or to a CD if you can burn one. Even if it's an erroneous message you must assume it's not. If the drive fails you'll have no warning and then all files will be lost unless you're willing to spend hundreds of dollars. Can you tell us what make of drive you have?
