Greetings.

I'm working with an older Dell system running on Windows ME. Windows refuses to recognize that there is a CD-ROM drive connected to the PC. There is nothing in the Device Manager. The drive itself is definitely getting power (lights flash, opens/closes, ETC), and I reseated the connection it had to the motherboard last night.

I'm drawing a blank on what the problem could be. I'm sure its something simple I've overlooked.

Does the system recognize the drive in BIOS or when you start up? How is the drive hooked up? Is it by itself on the cable?

Ok, the CD rom drive is on the boot menu.

The cable that hooks the CD rom to the motherboard is also hooked up to a CD-RW drive (its an older system >.>). Neither work.

Randomname: Try this. Go into Device Manager, open the CD/CDRW drive entry and right click on each one. Choose Uninstall. Restart your computer and see if they are now recognized. If that doesn't work, then try the next steps.
If you have a spare IDE cable, replace it .
Check the back of the drives to see that they are configured either Cable Select or Master/Slave.

By the way..same problem here win98se....have googled,searched,forums,driver sites,windows knowledge base....Nooo luck

Be sure drives are jumpered master and slave first. Try a different cable.

RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
2. Click the Device Manager tab.
3. Click the Hard Disk Controllers branch to expand it, click your IDE controller, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Settings tab.
5. In the Dual IDE Channel Settings box, click Both IDE Channels Enabled, and then click OK.
6. Click OK, and then restart your computer.
7. Test to determine if the issue is resolved by trying to use your CD-ROM drive. If the issue is not resolved in Windows 98, perform the troubleshooting steps in the following article by clicking the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Should be the same foe "ME" because they are pretty much the exact same.
