Every time I try to use my cd player (Lite-on 48247s) my windows xp pro reboots. Sometimes it will wait for a command to play and sometimes it reboots upon close of the tray with a cd in it. We have swapped players...no change. We have changed the ribbon cable...no change. I have un-installed every player I have and left only Media Player 9 on the machine. I find no resource conflicts and get no error messages. I am beginning to think it may be the motherboard, although everything else is nominal. Help me Santa Help Support Guy---you're my only hope!

You could try this

XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe - Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer
Dowload that if it don't work then do the following

Fix for missing DVD/CD drives.

Create a text file with NOTEPAD containing the following data exactly as below and name it FIXCD.REG
You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : fixcd.reg
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be fixcd.reg.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result

Double click on the file and say yes to the merge into registry question.

----------------------- Use text after this line, contents of FIXCD.REG -----------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]
------------------------------ Use text before this line --------------------------------

Thank you so much for your help. My system recognizes that there is a cd drive present. (I tried the link-fix...no dice.) When I troubleshoot there is no problem registered. Any other suggestions before I regedit?

Yes. It happens no matter what type of CD is inserted. I only have the problem when I try to use this one drive. I have a DVD drive on the same ribbon cable that works perfectly. Is it possible for one part of the plug-in at the motherboard to fail while not effecting the other?

Hmmm...

Interesting...

What happens if you put the faulty CD drive on the same ribbon cable as the hard drive (changing jumpers of course) ?

Haven't tried that yet. Hmmmm...Both my hard drives are working just fine on the other ribbon cable. I wonder if I just swap the cables to the opposing plug-in?...
Nope...

What I'm after is there are some instances where CD drives will not play well together on the same channel ( the same cable )...

I should have said this before. This system has been running fine for about 8 months. It wasn't until about 3 weeks ago that this problem cropped up. I have done a system restore back to Dec. 1st with no success. I have uninstalled the driver...reinstalled the driver...I have removed all audio software from the computer as well. New motherboard here I come?
