Trying to format a blank CD-RW for DLA (drive letter access so can reuse the CD for data backups) using Roxio v5.2 software and continue to receive Format failed due to media damage error message at the end of every 25 minutes of trying different manufacturer CDs, driver updates, etc. on a new Dell Dimension E520 received last week running Windows XP Media Edition.

Rather than spend more hours troubleshooting this problem, suggestions of other CD/DVD burning software that has worked for you, preferably one with a free trial? I looked at Nero, but does it give you a custom install option of not installing the 20 other pieces of what I consider bloatware and may conflict with other media software already preinstalled on the machine?

Thanks in advance.

My Nero is an OEM Version, and had it awhile, but I think I remember you can custom install. I think most people leave InCD off. It can causes problems, from what I've read.
A friend had the Roxio software, and it was ok, but I like Nero better

DLA/packet writing software is the wrong choice for any important data (very unreliable), plus packet writing software in general can cause all sorts conflicts/problems with other burning apps.

Best to just use CD re-writables burned as DATA, or regular CDs for truly important stuff.

All the free burners burn DATA discs.

Thanks for the responses.

As looking for an intergrated package, not dla by itself, am using ashampoo software on a trial basis. So far, so good. As they say in the Geico commercial, I am finding ashompoo so far, so easy a caveman can do it. I'll report more fully later. I tried nero also, but I simply did not like the interface (personal preference) plus it installed too much software I did not need.

I'd read MysticEyes's post again! Packet writing is the wrong way to save data that you care about.
