I have a computer with a Mitsumi fx 4010 CD drive. The driver was apparently accidentally deleted when I tried to clear the hard drive and instead zapped the operating system, Windows 95. When I reinstalled it, the driver was missing. Can anyone help, please? Thank you.

Thanks. If I understand what you're saying, I should be using ide158.exe. Because I don't have Internet access on that computer, I burned that filed to a CD, then copied that to a zip disk and then copied that to a floppy disk, which I try to use on the third computer. But it didn't seem to work. Any suggestions? Thank you.

How did you go about installing it? Did you go to device manager, find the cd rom.select update driver,Install from a list or specific folder. navigate to the floppy and point to the file on the floppy as the driver?

Did what you said, but when go to MY COMPUTER & click on CD ROM get error that "This device is not ready." When you go to PROPERTIES, then DEVICE MANAGER, get a list saying: "Manufacture--Standard CD-ROM device; Hardware version--not available; Devise status--This devise is working properly." When you open & close the CD-Rom driver you hear turning but it doesn't play the CD. Any further ideas? Thanks

that seems like that it cant read the disc that is in the drive.

This could be that the disc is faulty or dirty etc.

It also could mean that the drive is on the way out.

Does it do this with ALL discs inserted into the drive

It may simply need cleaning. do you have a CD ROM cleaning kit? Its a special CD with a little brush on it that cleans the lens. You can pick one up at Walmart, Radio Shack ext.. for a few bucks.

It will not read any disks. And the light never goes on to suggest that it is operating. The CD drive worked fine when I used it to reinstall the operating system, but it has been nonfunctional ever since. So I don't think it would respond to a CD-ROM cleaning kit.

well Rico,
I'm really dunno what else to advise you to try. Back then it was pretty basic. Install the hardware, throw in the CD for in order to get the driver. 95 came with a generic CD ROM driver that would allow the CD ROM to work. So, perhaps you have a corrupt install. Did you format before you did a install or did you do a system repair install?
Maybe somebody else can give some info. you could try sending JohnWill a PM, he seems to be pretty good with CD ROM issues.

Well, If it was me I would do a clean install. this will take some time but it would be like new. after you use Killdisk then use the 95 CD to install your OS

Download and install procedure of [email protected] KillDisk free version

This program will allow you to do that. It is actually a better format. uses the 0 fill method.

Here is a guide with pics on how to use the program
http://www.killdisk.com/modes.htm

After creating the floppy or CD shut down the computer.
1.Put the floppy or CD in
2.boot computer it will come to a screen that ask what program you want to use. select "0"
for eraser.
3. That will bring you to the first screen showed in the guide I provided a link to above.
where it says "Fixed" those will be your hard drives installed on the computer. The little arrows under are the partitions. If you want to format the entire drive just highlight the fixed line (just like they have it in the pic.) If you wanted to format a single partition you would highlight the arrow with the partition you want to format.
4. Once you are sure you found the drive or partition you want to format press F10
that will take you to the 4th pic showed in the guide. Type "Erase-all-data" in the box press enter.

That's it. once finished press ESC a few times it will bump you out to Dos A: prompt at that time shut computer down remove the disk from the drive.
