I am running Windows 2000, my computer said that my disk was full, so I was deleting a bunch of music files Sunday night.

I must have deleted something else by accident because now my CD Drive will not recognize a CD, whether it be a audio or data CD.

I just keep getting the message: Please insert a disk into drive D:

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that has not worked at all. The Device Manager says: This device is working properly.

I am not a computer techie at all, so if you wouldn't mind giving me simple directions I would really appreciate it!

TIA~

Sounds like your cd-rom drive is just going bad, you might just want to go out and buy a new one, they are only around $30.00. If you want to troubleshoot the problem though there are lots of things you could do. you could open up the case and make sure it's getting power, make sure that the IDE cable is securely connected to the board and the drive. Make sure that there is not another cd or disk jammed in the drive, etc. It doesn't sound like a driver issue.

Kevbum522, thanks for the suggestions.

I burned a CD right before I deleted the files and it was working just fine. It just stopped working after I deleted the files. There was an error message at first when I tried to empty the recycle bin but then I was still able to delete the files.

It is getting power, the light will go on but it just does not recognize the disk.

A friend who has Win XP suggested I might try to system restore back to a different date, but I am not familiar how to do that in Windows 2000.

Thanks, that is probably why I could not figure it out.

Is there any other suggestions you can give me to try to retrieve the information I deleted by accident?

TIA~

Here is what I personally would do.

1) boot into safe mode and uninstall all entries under cd rom.
2) reboot and let normal mode redetect it and see if it works.

3) if not I would just reinstall a copy of windows over itself.

Thats just me though. I have found its usually faster and easier to spend an hour reinstalling windows than spend 4 hours troubleshooting.

Thanks Jtoast, I uninstalled all entries and rebooted but that did not solve the problem.

Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of windows to reinstall.

My ex has all the documents/disks etc... all I have is the computer. He will not give me anything back either.

Try this if you feel comfortable using regedit, but make sure to backup the registry first:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ CDRom
Make sure the key reads Autorun=1
