I don't know if this goes in other software or here, but here is a description of the problem:

About 10-15 seconds into the burning process on Nero suite (just upgraded to newest verision to see if that fixed, didn't) the computer shuts down like unplugging it from the wall. It has never done that until recently. I have burned cds on this computer previously with no problems. It always happens the same time also, DVD, cd, doesn't matter, when the burn starts, it shuts off. Please anyone, help....I need to burn....

Thanks,

It sounds like a power issue. When a CD burner starts, it sucks up quite a bit of power, and if your power supply is on its' way out, it can definitely cause it to shut down. I would look into getting a new power supply before it completely burns out on you.

The power supply is basically brand new. I have only had this computer together for a couple months. It is a good power supply as well. Could a power cable somehow be loose? Maybe there is a way for the OS to regulate power usage if for instance the burner wants to use so much, it could take away power from things not being used right now?

Thanks for the help so far.

It is a higher end Sony burner DRU-800A. It has been awesome until lately. The power supply is an Antec SP-500. They are both pretty new. I checked to see if there was a loose power cable or something and everything is still tight. The Smart Power power supply should make smart choices on power usage so, power should not be the problem. What can I do to troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks.

I would try that burner in another PC just for grins and see what happens.

I also heard that the newer version of NERO is buggy on some PC"s you might want to check out a CD/DVD burning forum they will probably be able to help more on the software related issues of burning.

I am running drive check V2.01 from the sony website tools. It passed the test without turning off the computer, so I think that rules out it is a power issue. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Like it was said the burner pulls some amperage when starting the burn and since it shuts off at the approximate same place and burning is a lot more of a load on a power supply than a test I would go with a problem with the power supply and I have seen a few that were bad right out of the box. How much time does it take to pull the connectors on the power supply and plug in another one and test it?
