I am running XP (Home) and use Norton AV 2004. This is a new computer. I have cleaned it using AdAware, but I still can't use Liveupdate or connect to any Symantec or McAfee site. I have no problems connecting to other sites. Below is my HijackThis file.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I found an easy answer. On my old computer I went to the Symantec site and they advised downloading a new version of the LiveUpdate program. I installed that and it found all the blocked hosts files, and now everything is fine.

Hi, I would check this file, it should be found bad

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [yvyjmh] C:\WINDOWS\yvyjmh

It does not appear as an active process, at least in the HJT log, however if you press CTRL+ALT+DEL together, to bring up the Task/Process Manager, it may be running.

The other problem> how to get it checked: if it is not showing in C:\Windows folder....you may need your Windows Explorer view settings made to be able to see hidden files, do this:

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search>Files and Folders>> and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"
Now, can you see that file in C:\Windows ?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [yvyjmh] C:\WINDOWS\yvyjmh.exe

If so> you can have that one file checked for malware, here:

http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html

If it turns out NOT to be bad, I would be surprised...do you know anything about the file, or have you seen it detected by any antivirus scanners or antispyware apps?

It may be just a leftover Registry entry but should be fixed unless it is some valid thing...

I found yvyjmh.exe in the Revovery folder of Spybot inside a zip filed called nCase9.zip. I also found 2 registry entries. Should I delete the file and registry entries?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Well, that entry does not show up in this newer log...

when you say "I found two Registry entries" do you mean by searching in the Regisitry, or did a program find these?

The backup in SpyBot's Recovery can be deleted...they call it Purge Recovery Items or something similar.

I don't know why this is showing, you do have the crypserv.exe running in System32...perhaps this one is from a change in Norton A/V, I can't really say...leave it alone for now, please.

I tried the Kaspersky link just now, fine here.
Try this site, let me know if you can go there:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

If you can, a full scan there, which does take some time> would probably be a good idea to do. You can wait until tomorrow to do so, but please let us know what files, if any, it finds and the locations on the hard drive, OK?
And, I would be scanning with AdAware SE, checking for updates first, at different times tomorrow too.
I often see scans with AdAware kick off the antivirus program when it hits bad files...just something you have to deal with I guess. Maybe something else will be found, but nothing else in the log now looks bad.

Hi- No, I don't know why, though it could be a setting in your browser....are you using Internet Explorer by the way? These online scanners do not work in perhaps Netscape or other browsers...

If you try this link, which is the same as you have been posting, does it work, or....when you manually type it into the address bar, does it work then?

http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html?

ONE other way- you can also use WINDOWS Explorer address bar to reach websites...Open a Windows Explorer window and type the link in at the top and hit Enter key to try it.

Registry search entries: I wonder how the entry in Hijack was removed, I assume you fixed that entry in a HJT scan at some point? I hesitate to tell you can delete the Regsitry entries...it depends on where you are in there and what you delete...the values on the right hand side are safe to, when a key on the left in dark blue is reached in a search> right click what shows except for Default value, anything else relating to that file ((yvyjmh)) and delete those things. Lastly, on the left side, delete anything that Search finds. That's the way I do it.

Hi, Try this: I believe you said something was found wrong with the HOSTS file or some blocked hosts were found...

Download Hoster from here:

http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip

Unzip, install the program and run it.
Press *Restore Original Hosts* and press OK*
Exit Hoster, and you should now be able to access the sites you need.

Hi, That nCase item should be deleted, nCase was probably removed by AdAware or SpyBot, it's notorious malware/adware.

Glad the HOSTS file work helped you.

See you when you can get back.
