The title is not a good one but it's a start.

I downloaded a game file yesterday via Limewire. I started to play it and got sidetracked to a "honey do" chore. Later on I was typing up a long paper adn when I tried to save it I got the message "out of resources" and something like C:\TEMP doesn't have room. That drive has 6gigs free space.
I ran Norton AV and it got hung up on C:\LIMEWIRE\SHARED. I aborted and began again and it ran fine until it got to the same place. Again i aborted and then looked at that folder and there were about 250 files!!! ... all kinds of .exe and .zip files, games, utilities, Xrated stuff. I deleted everything and then it only had one file. Something like key generate.exe. I deleted it and there were two .exe files with similar names. When I deleted them a new one popped up. I ran Norton AV on that folder and it found 45 files but no virus. I deleted them again and IT STAYED EMPTY ... for about 3 hours. I was typing another paper and got the message again that I was out of space and there were about 250 files back in that folder.

I went to COMMAND PROMPT, deleted them and there would be one. When I typed DIR there would be two then 4 then 7 , etc. Norton still says no virus.
PITSTOP checked and found no virus.

It is like LIMEWIRE is being dumped onto my hard drive.

Suggestion, hints, solutions will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks,

dd

HEY! Quick service. I'll leave you a great tip: Buy low = sell high! :)

NOK1 = I tried downloading it but it just sat there. It said DOWNLOAD IN PROGRESS but no progress meter or location of folder where it was downloading. I had tried this earlier with same results.

cybertech = My NOrton AV definitions were up to date thru last evening and found nothing. HOWEVER = Stinger has located
W32/Sdbot.exe/svchostx.exe
W32/Sdbot.worm.gen.virus!!! and found several files and deleted them. It's still going after 'em.

It finally stopped. It found 2191 infected files and deleted them.

Thanks.

NOK1 = SOS. It says Download In Progress but nope.
I tried downloading another file and it popped up and asked me if I wanted to OPEN SAVE ... the way it should do. BUT HIjack just doesn't move for me.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, cybertech. That did the trick. Here's my log. In addition to the virus problem my machine takes a LONG time to boot up. Kit is a Dell xpsT550, 768Megs of RAM, WINDOWS XP-HE. Pentium III. What do you see that should make it take so long? Thanks, my friend.

Some undesirable sypware there.

Download Spybot http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy.htm

Make sure to follow the instructions for updates prior to running the scan.

Click on "Search For updates" After the search has completed, the available Updates will be listed. Choose which Updates you would like to Download. Click "Download updates." The Updates will self install. The screen will change and the program will come back and be ready to use.

Sometimes the default Download Location will produce an Error. If that happens, look in the right panel. There you will find a small arrow next to the name of the current Download site. Click on it for a list of alternate sites. One of those should be able to retrieve the files you have selected.

Scan, click on fix problems then reboot.

Next:

Download AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by clicking

on "Check for updates now", connect.

Click on Start, Use custom scanning options, Customize.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"

"Scan within archives"
"Scan active processes"
"Scan registry"
"Deep scan registry"
"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL"
"Scan my host-file"

Click on Tweak,
Select scanning engine and click on "Unload recognized processes during scanning"
Select cleaning engine and click on "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

Then click "proceed" to save your settings.

Click on Next

Run the scan and fix everything.

Post another HJT log for review.

I have Spybot and Ad-aware. When I just now tried to get update for Spybot I get the message ERROR RETRIEVING UPDATE INFO FILE. This has happened before. Looking at the activity log for it the last updates were 3/25/04. Should I continue on?

you need to fix ythis one manually as the download/updates sites for the programs are blocked by the hosts file redirect

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these files

C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll

and Delete these folders
C:\Program Files\MyWay

then
Reboot normally &

down load the attached isearchfix.txt, by right clicking the link and spress save targetr as, save it to desktop and rename it as isearchfix.reg then double click it and say yes to the prompts

it will restore your IE toolbar options that this pest removes
then

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

then reboot &

Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R280 07.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

Derek: I did as you said, after printing the message and following it step by step. You said:

"Delete these files

C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll"

[***After making sure that hidden files, etc. would be shown, etc. I did not find this toolbar.dll to exist at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32]

and Delete these folders
C:\Program Files\MyWay

[***And this folder does not exist.]

then
Reboot normally &

down load the attached isearchfix.txt, by right clicking the link and spress save targetr as, save it to desktop and rename it as isearchfix.reg then double click it and say yes to the prompts

it will restore your IE toolbar options that this pest removes
then "

I'm ready to download the isearchfix.txt file but don't see it. LONG DAY! :)

OK. I followed the directions and, as I said above, I did not find the TOOLBAR.DLL at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

OR

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWAY folder

I got update to Ad-aware and Spybot, ran them, rebooting after each and here is the latest HIJACK THIS LOG

QUESTION: WHAT IS:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

SVCHOST.EXE was part of the name of the virus that started my inquiry here.

Thanks to all.

ALL RIGHT! That is the best news today.

I want you to know that I certainly appreciate all that you and the other guys have done to help me out. Some things are simple at my advanced age but sometimes the 1s & 0s get me befuddled.

Happy Easter to you all ... on both sides of the pond.

:)

Normally when you fix an O2 entry in Hijackthis it also deletes the DLL but we like to check as some don't get automatically removed

we were just checking with the myway folders, the log entry said file missing, sometimes that means the folder is left behind, sometimes the whole folder has gone

Run HJT again and check:

O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\SearchAt\2.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL (file missing)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

BACK AGAIN!

Today I was typing a document and began getting a message that OUTLOOK EXPRESS was not able to open. I wasn't using it. I ran SPYBOT (with updates), it found many objects that I then deleted and rebooted and then ran AD-AWARE (with updates) and it found 120 that I deleted and rebooted. This is my new HIJACK THIS LOG. Do you see anything here that would be trying to open OUTLOOK EXPRESS?
