can't create new folders on Windows 98

every time I try to create a new folder on my laptop, I get the pop-up "This has performed an illegal operation." How would I go about rectifying this?

#2 ·
You may need to give us more information. When you get the "illegal operation" message, there is a details tab that gives the faulting module and address. Usually a copy/paste of the first two lines of that is sufficient.

However the problem is occasionally the result of a damaged registry value covered in this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q259096

The resolution is to go to Start, run, enter regedit

The registry editor will open. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StreamMRU

Select the StreamMRU folder, right click on it and delete it. It will be recreated when needed.

Close the registry editor and try to open a new folder.

The Scanlog shows evidence of a search hijack and other unknowns.

First, obtain the CoolWebShredder (CWShredder.exe) from the site below, run it and have it "fix" all problems.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Then run HijackThis again and check and "fix" any of the following entries that remain. Have all browser windows closed when you click "fix checked". Reboot afterwards and create and post a fresh Scanlog.

I would also suggest running the IE Repair tool and let us know if it detects any unfixable problems:

>> Additionally, follow the instructions in this Symantec article to remove the remaining registry keys installed by this hijacker:

In Hijack This, check ALL of the following items. Double check so as to be sure not to miss a single one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0019C3E2-DD48-4A6D-ABCD-8D32436323D9} - C:\WINDOWS\BXXS5.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bxxs5] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\BXXS5.DLL,DllRun

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Taskbar Display Controls] RunDLL deskcp16.dll,QUICKRES_RUNDLLENTRY

Next reboot into Safe Mode and remove the following files and folders that are bolded

C:\Windows\Bxxs5.Dll

See here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406 for how to start in safe mode if you don't know how.

Reboot into normal mode

Now download Spybot - Search & Destroy (if you haven't got the program installed already)

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

Reboot

Last, run HJT again and post your log again to see if anything was missed.

Thanks

It's going to be tough to resolve then if we can't isolate it to a program external to Windows.

One thing I would want to know now is whether the issue occurs in a "Safe Mode" boot.

To start in Safe Mode you can press and hold the ctrl key immediately when doing a restart. You should get a "startup menu" with numbered options. Choose Safe Mode. Alternately you can run msconfig and enable the startup menu option under the Advanced tab. This has to be unchecked later.

When you hold the mouse over the "new" option, one of the things that happens is Windows looks for registry configurations for the creation of "new" templates for other file types, in addition to the "new" folder. For example new Wordpad documents, zip files, etc. Many of these options are not standard, but are installed by other programs. These configurations are scattered around the registry under the appropriate file types for the specific templates.

The Windows power tool, TweakUI, offers a method of seeing what is there and disabling them. I don't know whether you have that or are familiar with it, but it might help to install it.

Once you have it installed, select the "New" tab. Try unchecking, for a test, all the "new" options there and see if any of them is involved in the error.

Also, while I don't think this is involved in the problem, run regedit and see if the registry data for the "new folder" option is what is shown here:

And since MS is in this article identifying this as an Internet Explorer issue as well as Explorer, try running the IE Repair Tool:

That tends to rule out 3rd party programs starting up, but try the IE Repair Tool and see if doing what I suggested with TweakUI makes a difference.

There isn't much else we can try except a reinstall at this point.

Also while I don't have much hope for it, it won't hurt to try a registry repair. You can do this by going to Start > Shutdown > Restart in MS-DOS mode. At the c:\windows prompt enter:

scanreg /fix
