I have a fairly new e-machine with XP. XP is supposed to have built in CD burning software. I use new disks, have tried CD-R and CD-RW and after the CD Writing Wizard tries to burn the files it says: Cannot complete the CD writing wizard. There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be useable. I read somewhere that the service pack 2 may disable the IMAPI CD-Burning service. When I run services.msc and find IMAPI it is not running. I click start and it says it's running and then the next time I open it, it is stopped again. I have tried it on the manual and automatic setting, with same results. Do I just need to get Roxio's Easy Media Creator?

Emachines may have installed another CD burning program on the computer for you. The built in burning support in XP is good but its very basic and limited. Check to see what is installed ont he computer.

Also here's a free burning program: http://www.deepburner.com/
It doesn't have all the features of Roxio or Nero but you should be able to use it to burn basic things and see if it at least can burn a CD successfully.

I haven't found another burning program. Windows Media player comes up sometimes to try to help, but it just burns audio. I actually must have a Creative CD here somewhere, since I have found the box it came in! I think it is installed on my other computer, but that doesn't help this one. Thanks for the advice, I will try the free deepburner program and report back here.
