Ok, having a bit of an odd problem here.

My dads computer is playing up. He ran a virus scan the other nite, and during scanning it crashed. After it had crashed, my dad re-booted, and got an error message:
Cannot Find \Windows\System32\hal.dll

Now, after doing a search, I thought I had found the solution...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm

However, after extracting a copy of hal.dll to the windows\system32 directory, it made no difference whatsoever! It definately extracted the file too.

Apparently the problem could be in the boot.ini file, the hard disk has 2 partitions, one with windows, the other with documents. However, editing this file is far from easy. The problem is, with a windows 98 boot disk, it will not recognise the NTFS disks! So we tried using the windows recovery console thing in the XP installation disk, but that wasnt much good either, since you cant edit files or anything on there!
Also, everywhere that talks about this problem suggests that it has happened after installation, this computer has been running fine for months!

Windows is now complianing that there is a disk error.

However, partition magic disagrees, but I can't rebuild the boot.ini. I can't fix the disk 'error' because there is nothing in the recovery console to do so, and partition magic doesnt find an error so it cant fix it!
