i am assuming that i did something bad, when the other night i was getting this error while trying to use my epson smart scan:

escndv.exe has encountered a problem and needs to shut down

so i searched that on the internet and found 2 seperate instances and a fix, which included deleting some files and programs.

i did all that and now totally cannot get my scanner to work, even after reinstalling all the drivers and everything.......but that is a whole other problem...........

so then i noticed that a few of my sons games on here will not work properly. i am not sure if i did it or what. i mean they worked fine a few days ago! before i did all the scanner stuff.

so i tried system restore. and i keep getting the error saying cannot restore. i have tried every date they give me that is available and nothing. i turned off my norton, i tried it in safe mode. nothing works.

i must also add, that after i did the whole trying to fix the scanner there is a file on my desktop named: regbackup.

so i thought i may try to click on that to fix everything, well that even popped up an error that said: cannot import c:\documentsandsettings\owner\desktop\regbackup.exe. not all data was sucessfully written to the registry. some keys are open by the system or other processes.

so i am stuck and now here begging for help! thank you for your time!!

p.s. and i just ordered a new external hard drive to back everything up since everything has been running beatuifully for quite some time now!! guess i just jinxed myself!

Have you tried to deleting your scanner software using the add/remove programs in control panel, and then reinstalling it?
Check your IRQ settings (start>control panel>perforamnce and maintenance>system>hardware>device manager.
Your looking for a yellow flag.

thank you for the reply.

yes i did revove then reinstall the scanner driver and utility. it is an all in one unit. i just went and reinstalled the smart scan utility, not the whole software package., since i did not delete any of that that i know of.

i did check the device manager and there are no yellow flags.

so, would this have anything to do with why i cannot do a system restore? that is my biggest issue. since i am having performace issues with some games.

thanks again for your time and attention.

I really would have liked to have seen a couple of yellow flags :)
Then I would have said ah! its an IRQ conflict.
That would account for the games not working.

I'd remove the whole lot, disconnect the smartscan, and restart the computer.
Create a restore point and then see if you can restore to it.
Getting system restore to work is the first issue.
Getting the scanner to work is another.

Can you go to
start>control panel>administrative tools>computer management>click on system tools, then event viewer and see if anything is showing up with a red error message.

well i realized what i did wrong when i reinstalled the scan driver, i accidentially installed teh one for xp 64-bit.

so i fixed that and downloaded the right one, scan did open and start this time, but at the same point, i am still getting the

escndv.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't know if it matters, but i am trying to make prints from negatives. i have never tried it before now, and i am doing what the instruction manual says to do, but then i get this error!!!!

the fixes that i found and tried the other day, were for epson scanners, but not my exact model, so that may be why i screwed everything up.

any ideas about that??

and the game still does not work! a window pops up , like the game is going to start, you see the name of the game, and you even hear the music, but there is nothing in the window, i can still see my background through it. and i don't have a mouse of anything then. i have to run the task manager to close out the game.

lastly, why can i not do a system restore????

should i still do what you suggested and remove all the epson programs and then reinstall? and also try to make a system restore? i just didn't want to make a restore point when i know something is wrong.

you are the expert, i will do as you say :)

thanks again for your help!

Me, Expert?
Nope.
Just someone who's used the same techniques to clear problems for himself.
The system restore point is the important thing.
If you can't create and restore to that, then any mistakes in the future will leave you very exposed.
System restore is one of the major tools to repair pc's and its important :)
Is system restore turned on? Forgive me for asking, but I'm lost that it won't work.
Lastly, a google says you aren't alone on this, see
http://www.wincustomize.com/articles.aspx?
The above link mentions a Norton feature I'm not familiar with but might explain the problem.
Also these 2
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1795
http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/46198.html

If you have Nortons system works then explore the first link I mentioned.
Failing that.
Delete the scanner software and restart. Installing the 64 bit drivers over the top does cause big issues.
Thats why I'm saying completely uninstall and delete the software.
You really have to do the same for the game, preferably at the same time.
As I've said, I'm not an expert, I'ts just what I've found works.
At a guess, you've annoyed the registry God and she needs a sacrifice.
Hopefully these steps will satisfy.

that first link actually worked! i created restore point and it worked, but why would none of the other dates work?!

and it also won't let me go back. the only choice i have is january.

so.........

i still did not delet all the epson stuff yet. i was sort of worried, cause i can't find a disk or anything with the software on it, so i don't know if it is self installing or if it is all available on their website. i have to check that and then do that.

i got the game to kind of work. i just keep clicking on the window and all around the window and sometime, the picture will start and eventually appear. i switched it to full screen and it seems to come on when that is active. but now that i said that it probably won't work!!

so at least we seem to be making some progress, at least with this problem. i actually have another one now! my luck!!

don't know if you have any experience... i just got my new external hard drive today.

i hooked everything up and got the little thingy in the system tray that said new drive found, then ready for use.

but now i cannot find the drive anywhere! the only thing i see that it can be, is listed under USB device in device manager. but as per the instructions that came with it to format it, i cannot access it and it is not visible on disk management.

i did post another thread here to see if anyone could help, i didn't know if you could or not, plus i wanted to get our original problem fixed before i popped another one on you! :)

The hard drive one is easy (famous last words). But you've probably got that sorted by now.Start>all programs>control panel>performance and maintenance>administrative tools>computer management>storage>disk management.
You should be able to see the drive.
click on it, right click and format it.
Choose NTFS (much better file system)

okay.
Now that system restore is working, its better.
If you can't find the installation cd, then google it.
It will probably be sitting on the epson website.
Go through the total delete process, restart, then reinstall it.

Getting the printer to work is the next most important thing as far as I'm concerned.

Lastly, having got the printer to work, we'll tackle the game.

BTW I assume you have anti virus/spyware installed.
I mention this only cause it will be fustrating if it turns out that you've got invasion issues.

sorry it took me so long to get back with you.

i did what you said to do and then epson finally got back with me and i was trying to do what they told me to do, which i couldn't do all of it, cause they were asking me to delete some files and i couldn't even find the files they wanted me to delete.

anyways, it is still doing the same thing. so now i am waiting for them to reply again. they gave me a number to call, but it is long distance of course! i may try to see if they are still open when my cell minutes are free at night, but i doubt it.

about the game issue i was having, now that i have it set to full screen mode it seems to work fine.

to answer your last question, yes i do have norton antivirus up and running and current.

one other quick question. why do files and things that i delete not show up in my recycle bin? i was trying to get back something my son deleted and nothing is there.

thanks for your patience!

Right click on your recycle bin.
Go to properties
Go to global settings
Check to see if you have a tick in the box "do not shift to recycle bin, remove files immediately, "

Good luck with the printer issue.
I'm curious to read just how hard it is to repair the damage :)
