Interesting Deke........... I know we have a few Call Centers here that deal strictly with the USA......... I thought they were all incomming though. The bombarding was probably on behalf of an American company......... setting up in Canada where its cheaper to operate........

just speculation on my part...........:D

I will probably be more careful about checking my caller ID from now on.

The minutes are no problem as I have accumulated over 700 Rollover minutes in just the last 6 months.

I am on that list in Texas but this was to my cell and from Canada.

No protection for that except not answering.

The company I worked for is obviously Canadian but we were mostly State calls. It's just the way it works..... and mine was interview stuff so the No call list doesn't apply... There are some grey areas that just haven't been seen to as of yet.

I just saw a news item on CTV about American call centre companies setting up shop in Canada mainly for making calls back into the USA. They are doing this for two reasons: 1) reduced cost of doing business, and 2) to bypass American telemarketing laws.

So, even if the call originates from Canada, it still may be an American organization behind it.

Hi Moonmist. I just went back and re-read your post, and yes, you essentially made the same point as me. I didn't mean to confuse you. Its just that when I saw the news item, I thought it was relevant to this thread. So I thought I would make that contribution.

Have a good day.;)

I guess we don't have enough tellemarketers in the US now they are going to strart bombbarding us from Canada.
Hi Deke.

When you answered the call, and no-one was there, it was probably because the telemarketer was using a Predictive Dialer. A computer sequentially composes phone numbers, and dials them to see if they are live. If the Predictive Dialer finds a live number, it adds the number to its data base, then hangs up.

It is the telemarketers' way of "harvesting" phone numbers for their data base - sort of the equivalent of e-mail spammers harvesting e-mail addresses for bulk e-mailing.

There are certain tones that are generated on a phone line for various situations. One such tone is generated when a phone number has been disconnected. Telezappers work by generating that tone. Predictive Dialers don't add numbers that give that tone to their data base. They also tend to remove such numbers from their data base.

The following link gives a bit better description of this. It also allows you to download a .wav file that gives the same tones as a disconnected phone line. If you have an answering machine or voice mail, you can record this set of tones before your greeting. It will give predictive dialers the impression that your number is disconnected. But, real people trying to phone you may find the tones a bit annoying.

Check it out here.

Schnitzu-Thanks for the info. I had heard about that but your explantion and link made it easier to understand

Since I have an external caller ID on my cell I am going to be more cognizant about what appears on it.

Your welcome, Deke. Any Telemarketing call originating in Canada will have to display their caller ID and name display. That is the law here. I don't know if that is also true of calls originating in the USA or not.

Have a good day.

Schnitzu-That would work on my home phone but my cell only shows a name if it is stored in my phonebook. So all I get is the number which will be ignored when it has that area code attached.
