I have Windows ME. I was able to use the computer a few days ago. This morning I am not able to get the computer to log in. It will start up and go directly to SafeMode. I try to go into Safe Mode but a message appears "Windows protection Error. You need to restart your compputer. System halted." I turn the computer back off and the same thing happens. It acts like its going to log on but back to the screen to pick Normal, Safe Mode, Text Log, etc. No matter what choice I pick it automatically goes back to the Safe Mode option and every time I pick it the above error message comes up. Any help with this or is time for a new system?
Thanks in advance

Do you have an antivirus cd? Or maybe one of the dos antivirus scanners that you can snag off the net and put on a cd or floppy? I've never used win/me but I have heard they tried burying dos with that os. Maybe someone else can come up with better suggestions, but that's my first thought.

when you get a "Windows protection Error" its usually a fatal error of some kind. the easiest thing to do is to re format and re-install windows. if there is nothing that you need on the hard drive (hopefully) then the best thing to do is boot to the a: prompt with your ME startup disk if you have one and type in at the prompt "format c:/s" the "s" will put system files from the boot disk so that you are able to star the computer to the "c:" prompt. once format is complete restart with the ME startup disk and when prompted start windows "with cdrom support". once the drivers are loaded for the cdrom, usually the drive will be "E" if you only have 1 hard disk, then you will be able to go to the "E" drive and type in "setup" and re-install Windows. Hope this helps.
