I have a gig of RAM and have run with pagefile OFF for some time with no problems whatsoever. I've read on a few respectable websites that this is OK with lots of RAM, though on this board I've seen plenty of warnings against turning off pagefile.

So... what if I were to turn it back on and tell my pagefile to exist on an external USB drive? Is USB fast enough and will this speed things up since my PC will be able to read/write to my local hard drive while using the pagefile on the USB drive?

You can assign your pagefile to any device or partition, it just isn't wise to put it on an external device because it's considerably slower than an internal drive. I would suggest partitioning your internal hard drive so that space is reserved for your pagefile, and then use your USB drive for storage.

Actually, you can't assign the page file to a removable device, try it if you don't believe me. :) And, as mentioned, it's a REALLY bad idea anyway.
